Virtual graffiti tour in St.Gallen

Student and sprayer Cynthia Honegger wants more space for the sprayer scene. Her bachelor thesis uses virtual reality (VR) to show how graffiti could enrich the marketing of the city of St.Gallen.

For her bachelor thesis, Cynthia Honegger thought about the benefits that can be drawn from street art for city marketing. The pieces (works) are present in every city. How can a city's marketing use its colourful facades to position itself and what advantages can be gained? She interviewed experts from the street art cities of Basel, Chur, Munich and Krefeld, analysed websites and conducted literature research.

St. Gallen transforms into a street art city

Some of the findings flowed directly into the teaching project: a virtual street art tour through the city of St. Gallen. Cynthia spent days walking through the city looking for suitable areas to realise the project.

In the video, users can experience a tour in a 360-degree environment in which street art has been digitally applied to still grey walls. The project aims to offer more acceptance and recognition to artists. To this end, an insight into St. Gallen as a possible street art city is to be given without having to go through the time-consuming approval procedures.

In the virtual reality tour, you discover St. Gallen as a street art city. Artworks by local, national and international artists were virtually attached to the facades, so that a high level of diversity is shown.

As soon as you put on the headphones and press the play button, you discover the monastery town in a new guise. By means of interactive elements, you navigate to the various locations and find out who created the work.

The project was developed as part of a bachelor's thesis from the Multimedia Production degree programme.
