Bach virtual reality

Bach goes Virtual Reality

In the Himmelsburg container, visitors could enter the Himmelsburg and listen to the Weimar cantatas during the so-called "Bach Days". The event was held in honour of Johann Sebastian Bach in the city of St.Gallen.

The so-called Himmelsburg, which was lost in a fire in 1774, has been resurrected virtually: In an ambitious project, the Thuringian Bach Weeks are developing a virtual reality version of the Himmelsburg with a number of specialists. The staff of Thüringer Tourismus GmbH travelled for five days last week to bring the Himmelsburg, Bach and Thuringia closer to the people of St.Gallen.
Armed with VR glasses and headphones, passers-by could virtually walk through the building destroyed 250 years ago, Johann Sebastian Bach's former place of work in Weimar, and listen to the music created there at the same time.

Music from the sky

With glasses and headphones, Bach fans could take a trip back in time and experience the special acoustics of the castle chapel with the cantata "Himmelskönig, sei willkommen" (BWV 182): The musicians are seated at a height of about 20 metres - so it seems as if the music is coming down from heaven.

In addition, one had the opportunity to experience different perspectives in the Himmelsburg - from the bottom of the benches to the very top of the musicians. Depending on where you are, the music sounds different.
