Fancy an excursion complete with birdsong from your balcony or sofa: Werdenberg Castle is another castle that can be explored virtually on a 360-degree tour with the Society for Swiss Art History.
Werdenberg Castle in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley is one of the landmarks of the Werdenberg region and the village of the same name. As a complex of national architectural and historical significance, the castle dates back to the 13th century. It was built by Count Rudolf von Montfort. A Knights' Hall, which has remained almost unchanged to this day, tells of this period. Over the decades and centuries that followed, the castle changed hands time and again.
The life of the knights and Pippilotti Rist
Its last occupant, Frieda Hilty, whose father - the legal scholar Carl Hilty - had bought and developed the property, finally bequeathed the castle to the canton of St. Gallen in 1956. This in turn gave rise to the Pro Werdenberg Foundation, which restored the tiny town and opened the castle to the public. Today it serves as a museum. In addition to the historic rooms, a special highlight is an installation by Pippilotti Rist, which the artist created especially for the castle.
360° immersion in castle life
The virtual tour was created as part of GSK's "360° Swiss Heritage" app, which we have already reported on. reported. As part of the lockdown, GSK has now put special highlights of the app, which was originally designed for virtual reality glasses, online. Werdenberg Castle is now the fourth project. According to the press release, the offer is being continuously expanded.
