The Fusion Arena hosted the first edition of the "Showdown Masters" on Saturday, 9 November. The Showdown Masters is the first PvP tournament with full-body virtualisation in virtual reality in Switzerland and probably even Europe.
How announcedThe first Showdown Masters took place on 9 November 2019 in the Letzipark shopping centre in Zurich. The matches started punctually at 09:00. A total of 64 matches were played simultaneously on two pitches up to the final. In the Fusion Arena, matches were played almost continuously, as there were always two teams in play and two other teams in preparation with a total of 10 backpack PCs. On the second pitch with 5 backpacks (1 reserve), which was temporarily set up in the lower sales level of the Letzipark shopping centre, the duel cycles lasted a little longer.
Live transmission from different perspectives
From the quarter-finals onwards, all matches took place on the temporary pitch in front of the audience. The matches were commentated by Luca Rigoni and broadcast on various in-game screens (bird's-eye, first-person and third-person perspective).
Some of the 64 teams were very diverse. One team consisted of a boyfriend and girlfriend or father and son, while more ambitious teams from the eSports scene also took part. Noetic and Babos Gaming provided a total of five teams. At 18:15, the final was officially "whistled off" and the first winning duo of the Showdown Masters was announced: Müller Michael and Aregger Robin, alias team "renniw". Robin took the floor at the prize-giving ceremony and grinned: "Why don't you read our team name backwards?" 😉
All results can be found here. More photos are also available on the Showdown Master Website published.
Further tournaments are planned
The organising committee of the Showdown Masters, consisting of employees of Fusion Arena and TrueVRsystems, will also be organising the Showdown Masters next year, but they do not yet want to reveal in what form at this point. However, one thing is certain: the next tournament will take place in spring 2020 and further maps/levels for the "Showdown" game will be offered over the course of the year.
