Several patents have recently been discovered that could indicate what PlayStation VR 2 will be capable of, especially in conjunction with the PlayStation 5. However, it must also be clearly stated that patents do not necessarily have to be realised.
The patents state that PSVR 2 could be wireless, have a battery life of around five hours and rely on eye-tracking software that recognises where you are looking. In addition, the new VR headset could have a resolution of 2,560 x 1,1440 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a field of view of 220 degrees. For comparison: the current PlayStation VR has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with a field of view of only 100 degrees.
Furthermore, integrated acceleration and gyro sensors should recognise where the user's head is and how it is tilted. The so-called "foveated rendering", on the other hand, increases the accuracy of the graphics a user is looking at while simultaneously reducing the resolution of what they cannot see. It is even reported that PlayStation VR 2 could cost as little as 250 US dollars, which sounds rather unlikely given the technology used.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has already confirmedthat a new PlayStation VR will not be released at the same time as the PlayStation 5 (probably at the end of 2020). This means we will have to wait until at least 2021 for PSVR 2.
