Bremerhaven: Maritime Museum gets new special exhibition

The German Maritime Museum (DSM) plans to launch a special virtual reality exhibition from May. A 35 metre installation of the "Polarstern" will be on display in the Bangert Building.

Setting off into new worlds: With its first special virtual reality exhibition, the German Maritime Museum (DSM) is entering pioneering territory from 18 May: together with the software agency Playersjourney and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the museum is presenting the technical possibilities of virtual and augmented reality applications.

A virtual stage takes visitors to the museum on board Germany's largest research vessel, the "Polarstern". They are given direct insights into otherwise inaccessible areas of the ship and can experience both life on board and the research work directly. In addition to real objects from research shipping, an interactive 3D model of the "Polarstern" and a 360-degree rotation on the ship play prominent roles in this special exhibition. Individual parts of the special exhibition will then be incorporated into the newly designed permanent exhibition "Man & Sea", which the museum will open in 2021.
