The Japanese game publisher Square Enix, known for well-known series such as "Final Fantasy", "Deus Ex", "Tomb Raider" or "Dragon Quest", is not yet quite comfortable with virtual reality.
According to Yosuke Matsuda, the president of Square Enix, VR is very interesting, but it is still too expensive for customers. The investment that has to be spent on the hardware is too high at the moment, they say, even though there is a lot of potential in virtual reality.
"I do believe that prices will fall in the future and VR will become more accepted. But on the other hand, there is the comfort of the equipment. It is still quite clunky and distracting," says Yosuke Matsuda in the current issue of EDGEwho prefers that players do not need accessories such as headsets.
Yosuke Matsuda is the Augmented reality more open: "The other thing I'm interested in right now is augmented reality for mobile devices. We'd like to do quite a few different games with that kind of technology." The “Blood ties" -Extension for "Rise of the Tomb Raider", for example, has a VR mode, but otherwise keeps Square EnixWith only a few exceptions, the latter are actually lagging behind in this respect.
