The digital mock-up: VR in architecture

On 28.10. 2021, the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum invites you to the topic of architecture and virtual reality. A free guided tour and discussion with Astrid Staufer and Tom Bachmann will take place at 18:00.

Mock-ups are about simulating, testing, optimising. But as one wanders through the current " mock-up " exhibition at S AM, the question can arise at certain points whether the means are adequate to the end. Physical mock-ups are expensive and their eventual disposal contributes to the already notoriously poor waste record of the Swiss construction sector, writes the S AM.

In a specially organised guided tour, questions such as: How can virtual reality support architects in the realisation of their projects? Are physical mock-ups, which are purely for simulation, a discontinued model? What additional possibilities open up when we simulate architecture virtually in advance? For which tasks will a physical mock-up be indispensable in the future?

The tour will be accompanied and commented on by architect Astrid Staufer (Staufer & Hasler Architekten) and then dive into the virtual world with VR specialist Tom Bachmann (HEGIAS). Equipped with VR glasses, participants will be able to see for themselves what new possibilities digitalisation opens up in architecture and where the limits of the use of virtual mock-ups lie.
