With the newly launched augmented reality app, mobile phone users can digitally discover the two BLS steamships Blümlisalp and Lötschberg.
Go on a voyage of discovery on a steamship from the comfort of your sofa and have the animated steam engine explained to you digitally? From today the BLS is launching a new augmented reality app. The app, called "BLS Steamship", allows mobile phone users to experience a virtual model of the steamship in 360-degree mode.
To do this, they prefer to point their mobile phone at a horizontal surface - such as a table - onto which the steamship is then projected. This means that the virtual ship "stands" in the centre of the living room. The user can walk around the table or the ship and discover it from different perspectives.
The engine room in 360-degree mode
Mobile phone users can view the rooms, such as the engine room or the wheelhouse, in 360-degree mode. Various buttons provide more information, for example about the functions of the steamships. And thanks to a live map, users know exactly where they are on the lake at all times.
BLS developed the app together with the Zurich-based virtual reality agency Ateo developed. The development and test phase took around two years in total. The app was first tested by BLS employees and then by interested customers.
