Google is expanding the user experience in its product search. Anyone looking for decorative cosmetics can try them out right away. Augmented reality within the search makes it possible.
The internet giant Google wants to offer more consulting services from bricks-and-mortar shops online. A first feature is virtual testing options for decorative cosmetics such as eye shadow or lipstick. Together with ModiFace and Perfect Corp, Google has developed an augmented reality service that allows customers to search for "Mac Powder Kiss Lipstick", for example, and then test each shade of the collection in the Google app either on models of different skin colours or on their own face in AR mode.
Brands that are already integrated include L'Oréal, Mac Cosmetics, Black Opal and Charlotte Tilbury. According to Techcrunch the companies involved do not pay Google to place their products in AR Search. Instead, the longer-term goal is to strengthen the e-commerce platform Google Shopping, through which make-up purchases are made.
Inspired by experts
If you don't yet know exactly which lipstick is the right one, you can also get inspiration from Google Shopping or the Discover feed in the Google app. Beauty, fashion, interior design or gardening fans and experts present their favourite products there. Anyone interested in a product can find out directly from the experts why they like this product and how they use it. Once customers have found a product they like, they can simply order it. The new function is based on the work of Shoploop, formerly part of the in-house Google incubator Area 120.
Google has been experimenting with the integration of AR objects from frequently searched terms into its own search engine since May 2019. It started with animals, as we reportedplanets were added later and products such as our Report and most recently there was an AR version of Baby Yoda. If you google the relevant terms, a 3D model is prominently displayed in the search results, which can be brought into your own living room via augmented reality, animated and in its original size.
