St. Jakob-Park, the home ground of FC Basel, will be equipped with a new 5G network. The Swiss club also announces the CamCheck tool, which enables spectators to watch replays in the stadium, as well as 360° and AR applications that make matches even more exciting.
The 5G Smart Stadium at St. Jakob-Park - also known as the Joggeli - is set to usher in the digital age. The stadium now has the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard and is covered throughout by the high-performance 5G network. "This will form the basis for further innovations from 2021 - and the CamCheck will be the first milestone on this digital journey," says FC Basel.
As soon as visitors are allowed back into the stadium, the so-called CamCheck will also be active at all FCB home matches and available live via the stadium Wi-Fi and the Sunrise 5G network throughout St. Jakob-Park. FC Basel is tackling the project with its partner company Sunrise.vViewers can choose from one of four camera angles in the FCB app and can either follow scenes live or rewind a few minutes to watch them again in the replay from a multi-angle perspective. Highlights can be analysed down to the smallest detail using the slow motion function.
5G as a driver of innovative technology
Frank Schaffner, Director Digital at FC Basel 1893, says: "Our Smart Stadium partnership with Sunrise will - not least thanks to 5G and IoT - offer spectators in the stadium a completely new football experience around FC Basel 1893's home matches. Of course, the football match on the pitch will remain the centre of attention in Switzerland's first 5G stadium. However, the new technology will enable us to launch a range of different services that will offer fans added value during the game and improve the matchday experience in the long term. Sunrise and FCB are working together to make St. Jakob-Park even more unique and varied."
The next steps planned as part of the smart stadium partnership are 360° live videos and augmented reality applications that can be used to display additional player data. Of course, these applications also require an extremely large amount of data, which can be covered by 5G.
Even more camera perspectives are planned in the further innovation phases to provide insights behind the scenes at FCB. The aim of such innovations is to inspire fans far beyond football.
