Experience virtual mountain rescue first-hand without any risk

The VR experience - The Rescue - enables visitors to the 100 Years of Bavarian Mountain Rescue anniversary exhibition at the Alpine Museum in Munich to experience a mountain rescue operation virtually.

In close collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the straightlabs team developed the immersive VR experience - The rescue -in which a mountain rescue can be experienced from the perspective of the rescued person. Users are immersed in an emotional and realistic alpine disaster scenario and are rescued by the mountain rescue service by helicopter.

Experience an exceptional situation safely with VR

Here, a real mountain rescue bag and a rope hoist in combination with a virtual reality application simulate the exceptional emotional situation of mountain rescue. Participants use VR goggles to experience how they are first treated by the mountain rescue team and then lifted into the sky by a rescue helicopter. A special room design and direct dialogue with the developers of the project and representatives of the mountain rescue service round off the experience.

The following trailer gives a first insight:

A short making-of with Fabrizio, Antoine and Stefan from straightlabs provides an insight into how the VR installation works:

Creative & Technical Director Fabrizio Palmas commented on the collaboration with BR as follows: "From the initial idea to the complete experience, the collaboration with BR was characterised by productivity and constant dialogue. We are really proud of the great results we were able to achieve together. We are also grateful for the productive collaboration with the dedicated mountain rescuers at the Centre for Safety and Training of the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service in Bad Tölz. It was exciting for our team and helpful for the development of this experience to be able to experience a rescue situation there ourselves! I look forward to sharing the immersive experience with all interested guests soon and am excited about the future of this project."

Originally, the project was to be presented to the public in June as part of the "100 Years of Bavarian Mountain Rescue" anniversary exhibition at the Alpine Museum in Munich and then presented to various helpers.

Due to the pandemic situation, the development focus was initially placed on the associated website and a preliminary version of the VR experience for download (for interested owners of VR glasses). These are available at: https://dierettung.br.de/ available.
