Learning English with VR glasses

The language school launches the first language course with the latest technology. Learning in a real-life situation increases memory.

Around the world in 5 days - Discover the world with the English Virtual Reality Travel Course - under this motto, the innovative Migros Club School English courses with virtual reality. From now on, English learners will travel around the world using VR sequences and thus acquire the necessary language skills, according to a statement.

In five course days, participants fly to different places and talk directly to locals in English, go out to eat at the best restaurant in town and order a fancy drink at the bar in the evening - virtually, but still so real that they feel like they have just come back from their trip.

The new virtual reality language course was developed in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Graubünden and co-financed by Innosuisse. In March 2019, the Swiss Agency for the Promotion of Innovation gave the green light for the development of the Club School's new learning offer.

Multidimensional learning is possible with VR

"Various studies have shown that multidimensional learning in a simulated but still real everyday situation increases memory. We wanted to use this potential and create a new learning experience," Nathaly Tschanz from the UAS Graubünden is quoted as saying. "By immersing the learners in authentic language situations, the practical transfer is facilitated. Language knowledge applied in context creates more confidence, inhibitions are released," the lecturer for digital business management and augmented realities is convinced.

"The time is ripe for VR application in language learning. The technology is now mature and the glasses are lighter and easier to use than they were a few years ago," Gigi Saurer, project manager at Klubschule Migros, is quoted as saying. It is possible to get started with a calculable investment.

This course also places new demands on the teachers: "We have given our language course teachers - especially those who enjoy technology - further training ourselves," adds Saurer. Over the next few months, the Klubschule will check how the course participants react. The VR offer will be extended to other languages depending on demand.
