Making magazine content a three-dimensional experience: "Geolino" launches AR app for children

The children's magazine Geolino is teaming up with Inception XR to launch an augmented reality app for children. The aim is to bring selected content from the magazine to life in three dimensions on a smartphone.

GeolinoGermany's biggest knowledge magazine for children is launching a unique new app in which the content can be experienced in three dimensions using augmented reality (AR): the Geolino app. From now on, some of the magazine's content will be equipped with AR and brought to life in a new way.

The "Geolino" app was developed in cooperation with Inception XR, an XR content network in which the RTL Group has a stake. The app is a combination of the digital edition of the four-weekly magazine, supplemented by AR experiences in the form of 3D animations of animals or objects that can be projected into the environment via the camera of the tablet or smartphone. For example, Geolino readers can experience the moon landing on their own kitchen table, watch dangerous panthers hunting in their own living room or let a life-size flamingo walk through their children's room and learn about the big wide world in a fun way. The programme is complemented by interactive games and exciting quizzes.

First children's magazine to use AR

Rosa Wetscher, Editorial Director G+J Family Editorial: "Children are digitally savvy and love interactive content that can be experienced intuitively. With the new 'Geolino' app, they can now read all the magazines digitally on their mobile phones or tablets and get the cool, animated additional content."

Geolino is the first children's magazine to use augmented reality (AR) in an app.

Benny Arbel, CEO Inception: "When we started talking to 'Geolino', we immediately recognised the potential of introducing AR technology to children's magazines. We are excited about this new partnership and are very pleased to launch this unique AR offering, which offers many wonderful opportunities to complement traditional 2D content and create a special reading experience."

The "Geolino" app can be used on all AR-enabled iOS devices and is now available to download from the App Store. The Geolino issue 4/2019 is available to test free of charge with the corresponding AR experiences. An Android version of the app will follow soon.
