Pokémon Go developers work on Harry Potter game

The developers of the immensely successful Pokémon Go have announced their next big project. It is based on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter universe and is scheduled for release in 2018. Hype seems pre-programmed.

The announced game "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" is being developed in conjunction with a video game division set up by Warner Bros, reports Techchrunch. Details of the game mechanics or technology used are not yet revealed.

According to the tech magazine, the AR game is inspired by the company's own "Ingress", which was created before Pokémon Go and laid the foundations for the global hit. Ingress focuses on team play and defending locations, and its sci-fi scenario is what sets it apart from Pokémon Go.

A second mega-franchise?

Although Ingress laid the foundations for the monster-collecting game, Niantic only achieved its breakthrough with Pokémon Go. When it was released in summer 2016, the game triggered massive hype. Players besieged public parks, resulting in new legislative pushes. According to analysts, the AR game has generated over one billion US dollars in sales.

With the acquisition of the rights to a Harry Potter game adaptation, the studio has landed another potential mega-franchise.
