When the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is released on 15 September 2017, VR users will need a new Gear VR headset according to the manufacturer, but it looks like the Note 8 will also fit into the older model of the VR glasses.
The buyer, Josue Feliciano, got his hands on a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 at an early stage and tried out. He has his Samsung Gear VR previously used the S8+, which is also quite a large smartphone. The differences in size are therefore limited. And the result: the Note 8 apparently works without any problems with the latest Gear VR model.
Samsung sagt jedoch, dass ein neues Gear VR gebraucht wird. „Wir haben ein neues Gear VR-Headset eingeführt, das den Galaxy Note 8 Formfaktor berücksichtigt und gleichzeitig die Abwärtskompatibilität gewährleistet. Wir empfehlen nicht, das Note 8 mit älteren Gear VR-Headsets zu verwenden,“ heisst es seitens Samsung. Eine konkrete Begründung fehlt allerdings. Möglicherweise hat das Ganze etwas mit der Hitzeentwicklung zu tun, weswegen erste Tests abgewartet werden sollten. Es könnte nämlich durchaus zu Schäden kommen.
