The band Gorillaz recently gave AR concerts in London and New York. Google's Geospatial API projects the band into the real world.
If you've had enough of Christmas carols and wry sounds under the Christmas tree, give this a try.
The Gorillaz have always seen themselves as pioneers in the music industry. In 2005, for example, the virtual band attracted attention with its first live performance in the form of 3D holograms. At the time, the virtual musicians were projected onto the stage with the help of Musion Eyeliner stage technology and also appeared as holograms at the Emmy awards ceremony in 2006.
Following the launch of Google's ARCore Geospatial programming interface, the band has now made a special appearance using augmented reality, performing their new single Skinny Ape in New York's Times Square and London's Picadilly Circus.
AR App Brings Gorillaz to New York and London
The performance can be viewed in the Gorillaz Presents app for iOS or Android. The digital figures and effects of the concert are projected in front of the real urban canyons.
Back in 2017, the Gorillaz released a 360-degree music video for the single "Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)"..
