VR Film from Central Switzerland celebrates world premiere at Venice Film Festival

The documentary film "Caves" by Carlos Isabel Garcia, who lives in Kriens LU, celebrates its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The 19-minute film about a cave explorer from Nidwalden is the only Swiss production selected for the VR Expanded competition.

Man has landed on the moon, flies around in space. But there are about a million kilometres of cave systems under our feet and only one percent has been explored. In his 360-degree documentary, Spanish-born Carlos Isabel Garcia accompanies experienced speleologist Lea Odermatt from Nidwalden and her team on journeys of discovery beneath the earth's surface.

The film leads through claustrophobic corridors, galleries and caves that are otherwise only for the eyes of explorers, shared Film Central Switzerland with. With the 360-degree film technology, a physical and emotional experience is conveyed to the audience.

"Caves" was selected for the VR Expanded competition. In the new competition format, the Venice Film Festival presents expanded formats of the moving image, which are summarised under the term Virtual Reality.

Carlos Isabel Garcia will present the film in Venice with his crew and producer Franziska Sonder. He now lives in Kriens in the canton of Lucerne. He complemented his art studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with a Master's in Cinematography at the Film University in Berlin. He works at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and as a freelance director and cinematographer.

He will present the film in Venice together with his crew and producer Franziska Sonder and is already looking forward to it: "I am very happy that La Mostra di Venezia has decided to bring my film "Caves" out of the cave into the light."

The 78th Venice Film Festival will take place from 1 to 11 September. The VR section will once again online take place.
