Swiss Augmented Reality Barometer 2021

Augmented reality has arrived in Switzerland. According to the latest study by the University of Lucerne, around half of the Swiss population has already used an AR application. Nevertheless, the technology is still in its infancy.

AR apps are becoming increasingly popular in Switzerland. As the Swiss Augmented Reality Barometer 2021 study by the University of Lucerne shows, around half of the Swiss population has already used an augmented reality application. Half of them have done so without realising that they were using AR technology. More than two thirds of respondents stated that they were satisfied with the AR apps they had used to date.

Compared to non-users, users of AR applications are younger, better educated and have a greater affinity for new technologies. Swiss people want AR applications most from retail companies, furniture retailers and clothing shops. 30% of Swiss people can imagine using AR glasses in everyday life in the future.

AR as a substitute for a shop visit?

The most frequently used augmented reality applications included face filters on social media, the virtual display of mountain names, distance measurements indoors and the virtual display of products. Around a third of the population had used augmented reality for the virtual display of products - for example to place furniture in the home, but also to try on clothes. According to the study, 39 per cent of respondents also stated that this application could replace shop visits in the future.

"Augmented reality product displays make it possible to see the products directly at the point of use. Consumers can get a first impression of the product without having to go to a shop first," says Reto Hofstetter, head of the study. Users could also well imagine using AR apps to navigate unfamiliar places.

However, it is difficult to predict whether AR apps will make shop visits obsolete in the future and how the technology will influence the Swiss market. Finding this out is the task of basic research.

The Swiss Augmented Reality Barometer is Switzerland's first representative study on the use of and consumer attitudes towards augmented reality applications. The results provide an initial insight into the relevance of AR applications for the Swiss market. The more than 60-page study report will be available from the end of June 2021 ordered become.
