HTC Vive has announced the new Vive Focus 3 VR headset at Vivecon 2021, which is set to usher in a new era of business VR. The market launch will take place on 27 June 2021.
"Vive Focus 3 ushers in a new era of business VR, designed for stunning visuals while being robust and lightweight, with superior comfort and ease of use. Our new Vive business solutions make it easier than ever for businesses to embrace VR, so everyone - from small start-ups to multinationals - can benefit from the transformative potential of VR," said Graham Wheeler, HTC Vive EMEA General Manager.
Vive Focus 3 reportedly combines "outstanding graphics with smarter ergonomic design, superior audio, inside-out tracking, and next-generation controllers". The VR headset features 5K resolution with 2.5K displays, a smooth 90 Hz refresh rate and a 120-degree field of view. The display uses true RGB subpixels, which is said to almost completely eliminate the screen-door effect. According to HTC Vive, the new visuals mean that "fine details like fonts are clearer and overall fidelity is much higher, making software design and user interaction feel more natural".
The manufacturer promises a high level of wearing comfort, which is achieved, among other things, with a good weight distribution. The magnesium alloy frame is also 20 per cent lighter and 500 per cent stronger than conventional plastics, at least according to the manufacturer. Vive Focus 3 has a wide and finely adjustable range for the interpupillary distance as well as a quick-change button and easily removable magnetic mounts at the front and back. Furthermore, the battery can be changed quickly, according to HTC Vive, which is why the device can remain in use all day. With the quick charge function, the battery is charged to 50 per cent in only 30 minutes and the charging status of a battery can be seen at any time via the LED display.
Vive Focus 3 features new open speakers with a pair of dual drivers for immersive sound. The speakers are non-contact, which means that the user can still perceive their surroundings even when they are in virtual reality. Vive Focus 3 uses an AI-powered inside-out algorithm for precise tracking. As it says from HTC Vive, data protection is a priority: all tracking data is stored in an encrypted format in the headset.
This is what they say about the controllers: "The newly designed controllers are easy and intuitive to use. They are the lightest 6DoF controllers on the market and last for 15 hours on a single battery charge. Support for hand tracking follows." Vive Focus 3 is powered by an optimised Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform, which combined with copper heatpipe and fan, is said to stay suitably cool.
