Sony announces next-gen VR headset for PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a successor to PlayStation VR, which is currently still called the next-gen VR system and will be released for the PlayStation 5. The release will no longer happen in 2021.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has not yet named concrete specifications, but there is talk of "dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity". We can also expect new VR controllers with DualSense features. Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management, said: "Today I'm excited to announce our next-generation VR system for PS5, bringing you the ultimate entertainment experience with spectacular advancements in performance and interactivity. With the new headset, players will experience an even greater sense of presence and be more immersed in their game worlds."

He adds: "We will continue to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that PlayStation is known for. We're harnessing everything we've learned since the release of PSVR for PS4 to create a next-gen VR system that improves every single aspect, from resolution to field of view to tracking and inputs." It goes on to say that the next-gen VR headset will be "connected to the PS5 console with just one cable". So it won't be completely wireless, but it should "make it easier to set up and use while providing a high-quality visual experience".
