Sculptures come to life with VR

The Swiss art museum in Basel, the Fondation Beyeler, launched the augmented reality app "Art in the Park" in August. It allows you to experience five works from the collection in Berower Park in a new way.

The new AR app from the Kunstmuseum Fondation Beyeler enables an interactive experience of five existing sculptures. Reality and the virtual world merge via the visitors' smartphone screens, creating new insights into the art.

Art for young people

"Art in the Park" was conceived by Studio Udvari/Karrer (Tibor Udvari and Philippe Karrer) in collaboration with five young adults, all participants in the art education project Art Lab. The app is primarily intended to motivate young people to engage with art, but should be enjoyable at any age.

The sculptures by Thomas Schütte, Hare (2013), Jenny Holzer, Living Series: You should limit the number of times... (1989-1989), Ellsworth Kelly, White Curves (2001), Alexander Calder, The Tree (1966) and Philippe Parreno Water Lilies (2012) are given a new level of perception thanks to the virtual world: Calder's mobile turns in the wind with the help of visitors, Parreno's water lilies begin to sway musically, and Kelly's sculpture is supplemented with a digital version that unfolds as you walk past.

"Art in the Park" is now available for IOS in the App Store. If you don't have a compatible device, you can borrow an iPad from the Art Shop to try out and experience the app in the park.
