Catholic Media Centre produces VR film

The Catholic Media Centre's underkath youth project can look back on a successful 2019. The videos on the YouTube channel were viewed around 100,000 times. In addition, underkath was able to make a name for itself at various youth meetings last year. This year, the underkath team is launching a virtual reality film on "Faith and Climate".

Underkath is a YouTube project for teenagers and young adults from German-speaking countries. The young people make videos and vlogs about their own lives and ask themselves questions about religion, spirituality, culture and politics. Whether vlog or short film - anything is possible. The Catholic Media Centre in Zurich is behind the project. The project is managed by Silvan Maximilian Hohl. Viktor Diethelm from the Swiss-German specialist centre for open church youth work is on hand to provide advice.

Underkath hits the nerve of the times

The YouTubers from Underkath produced forty films last year. These were viewed a total of 93,766 times on YouTube. The playback time of the video contributions on the streaming platform is around 3300 hours, or around 138 days. "The main target group of our YouTube channel is young adults aged between 18 and 24, and we have reached them well," says Silvan Maximilan Hohl. He is satisfied with the success figures for the past year: "We reach many young people with our videos and can enter into a dialogue with them about religion, faith and spirituality".

Church breaks new ground with virtual reality

This year, underkath is planning to publish a virtual reality film on the topic of faith and climate. "With the new VR film, we are showing how innovative the church in Switzerland can be," says Silvan Maximilan Hohl. He is convinced that the new technology can change church communication significantly in the future: "Virtual reality is still used very sporadically in communication. There are certainly opportunities for the church to get in touch with young people."
This is not the first project to link VR with religion, as we have already seen in numerous Reports have shown.
