Russian milk offensive: VR glasses for shivering cows

Green, lush meadows and bright sunshine - every cow's dream, especially in the Russian north. Because in the cold Siberian winter, dairy cattle see one thing above all: dull white. Not a trace of green grass. This is now set to change - with the help of special virtual reality goggles! In future, these will show Russian cows lush pastures all year round - and make the animals produce more milk in a relaxed manner.

The Russians are doing what the Appenzellers did as a successful gag for a commercial (we reported about it) were once used. Russian cows are to wear VR glasses in future to produce more milk. Even if it's hard to believe: The first prototypes of the goggles are already being tested, according to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow region. "Unprecedented results could be achieved".

VR goggles for Russian cows: initial tests reportedly show success

The glasses are specially adapted to the shape of the cow's head, they say. Compared to humans, cows' eyes are further to the side of their heads and their three-dimensional vision is limited. Their colour perception is also different: the glasses are supposed to show the animals shades of red, green and blue. (By the way, if you don't believe this, you can become a cow yourself in VR with the application from the Echem Agricultural Training Centre (LBZ) in Lower Saxony, as we have already done. reported.)

Initial tests are already said to be successful. The cows reportedly feel less fear and the herd is generally more peaceful. However, a large-scale study is yet to investigate the effect of VR glasses further. According to the ministry, some Russian farms have been using classical music for some time now - this is also said to stimulate milk production.

Russia has been investing more heavily in the domestic dairy industry for several years. Since the sanctions on various EU foodstuffs, the supply of dairy products has collapsed. With new, innovative methods - such as the virtual reality milk campaign - Russia should be able to continue to compete on the international market.

For the cows, however, one can only hope that this is a second PR stunt.
