"Golem", which was already revealed in December 2015, has finally been released for PlayStation VR after a long wait. The launch trailer serves as an introduction and shows various scenes of the VR adventure.
In "Golem" you are immersed in a mysterious picture book story and slip into the role of an adventurous child named Twine, who has been seriously injured in an accident. As Twine, you are not allowed to leave your bed. Therefore, you dream of exploring the outside world. Interestingly, you are able to create and control creatures made of stone, called golems. Through their eye you can see the world. You have to improve your skills to defeat the hostile golems of the "Silent Watch" and find hidden treasures and too powerful artefacts.
Jaime Griesemer, creative director at Highwire Games, goes into the official PlayStation Blog on the risks the studio took with Golem, including the open world: "The promise of virtual reality is always that you can get into another world - but the current generation of technology is only made for stationary gameplay and small areas. Streaming is difficult in VR and the technical investment has been huge, but as a result of this work Golem offers a huge city to explore. And it does so without loading sequences or interruptions, so you can be completely immersed. We've hidden weapons, treasures, artefacts and collectibles everywhere so your explorations will be rewarded."
On controls, Jaime Griesemer says: "Good controls shouldn't come between the player and the game itself - they need to disappear completely from that process. You shouldn't have to think 'I'm going to press X to hit', just 'I'm going to hit'. For us, the key to seamless control in VR is proprioception; awareness of your body and position in the world. Golem's Incline Controls allow you to move naturally by leaning forward as if you were taking a step forward and running."
