As part of the Startup Autobahn "Expo Day" in Stuttgart's Wagenhallen, Porsche is showing a VR entertainment service for passengers in cooperation with the start-up holoride. The aim of the project is to immerse passengers in virtual worlds of entertainment while driving.
This idea is not entirely new. At the beginning of the year we already reportsthat Audi is bringing VR entertainment to the back seat.
Now Porsche, together with the start-up company holoride a virtual entertainment experience for passengers. Virtual reality (VR) glasses with sensors are coupled to the vehicle so that their content is adapted in real time to the car's movements - just like Audi. This creates a highly immersive experience and can reduce symptoms of travel sickness.
The holoride software for motion-synchronised real-time generation of VR and Cross Reality (XR) content processes the vehicle data. The software thus makes it possible to offer "Elastic Content" - a new form of media specially designed for use in vehicles, so that the content can be adapted to driving time, movement and context. In future, the system will also evaluate navigation data and thus, among other things, adapt the length of a VR game to the calculated driving time. In addition, other entertainment offerings such as films or virtual conferences can be integrated. With the further expansion of the Car-to-X infrastructure, traffic events could also become part of the experience in the long term: Stops at traffic lights would then be unexpected obstacles in the plot or interrupt a learning programme with a short quiz.
The start-up company holoride was only founded at the end of 2018 by Nils Wollny, Marcus Kühne and Daniel Profendiner in Munich. The holoride business model includes an open platform approach so that other car manufacturers and content producers can also benefit from the technology.
Within the next three years, holoride aims to bring the new form of entertainment to the market using commercially available VR glasses for passengers in the back seat - the business model follows an open platform approach.
The VR entertainment offering will be presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt under the motto "Next Visions. Change the Game - Create tomorrow".
