In the near future, ski helmets will also become "smart": guests in the Austrian holiday region of Schladming-Dachstein can currently test the newly developed "Mohawk" ski and snowboard helmet, which is equipped with state-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) technology.
A built-in mini camera captures the surroundings on the piste, and the user can call up numerous visual data such as speed, altitude metres and a navigation system on the visor. Built-in headphones and a microphone enable live communication with friends via text messaging, audio or video. Particularly useful: an SOS button that can save lives in emergency situations.
"Schladming-Dachstein has long been regarded as a digital pioneer and we started working on digital projects at an early stage. For example, we were the first to offer comprehensive Wi-Fi or a virtual 360-degree tour of the entire region. ", says Head of Tourism Mathias Schattleitner. "We also celebrated the premiere of the world's first digital ski instructor CARV. With the AR helmet 'Mohawk', we now have a new, highly innovative project at the start and hope to contribute to its success."
The most important features of the new "Mohawk" AR helmet
- Speed and altitude: The rider's ski data is displayed on the screen so that they can always keep an eye on it while riding.
- Music Player: Play music from playlists.
- Navigation: Navigate with the AR piste map and find new points of interest (POI) in the ski area.
- Action Camera: Record great moments from the driver's perspective with the 4K Action Camera.
- SOS: The helmet can be monitored via GPS by the operator's control centre. In an emergency, the rider presses the SOS button, is called via the helmet and can get the help they need.
- Control centre: networking with other users or friends: You can see other drivers on the map and talk to them via the built-in headset.
Interested skiers and snowboarders can currently test the helmet at Intersport Planai for half an hour free of charge or for a whole day from €20 on the Planai, including a short familiarisation session. The official market launch of the "Mohawk" is planned for next year.
From the F-16 cockpit to the helmet
The "Mohawk" is being developed by the Israeli start-up company RideOn. The founder and CEO is former F16 fighter pilot Alon Getz, who has already used and developed AR technology in pilot helmets during his flying missions. Getz now wants to use the experience he has already gained with AR in the F-16 cockpit on the ski slopes.
