Mad Box: New console with VR support announced

The Slightly Mad Studiosknown from the racing sim "Project CARS 2" (see picture), have surprisingly announced a new home console called Mad Box to compete with Xbox and PlayStation.

The standalone device is expected to be the most powerful console yet. According to CEO Ian Bell, it will support 4K resolution, 60 frames per second and VR. In addition to PC peripherals (steering wheels, gamepads, etc.), VR headsets such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will be supported, with 60 FPS per eye (so 120 FPS in total). Future VR headsets can also be operated with the Mad Box, which will be on the market in about three years. Slightly Mad Studios have already found investors and there is talk of a competitive price, even though powerful hardware will be installed, which is known to be necessary for VR. However, there will be no exclusive games.

"It will support most major current and upcoming VR headsets. The specifications will be equivalent to very fast PCs in two years' time. We're in early discussions with component manufacturers, so we can't say much more at the moment, except that we've already detailed the designs," said Ian Bell. "We think the industry is a bit too much of a monopoly or an oligopoly. We think competition is healthy and we have the necessary hardware contacts to be able to realise something epic based on our designs."
