Almost nine months have passed since the devastating rockfalls in Bondo in the Bergell. The traces of the devastation are still clearly visible in many places. An impressive virtual reality film now shows the extent of the destruction.
Bondo is a small Graubünden mountain village not far from the Italian border. However, it is a full two hours' drive from the cantonal capital of Chur. Nevertheless, Bondo is a piece of the canton of Graubünden and part of Switzerland.
The small village on Piz Cengalo has a hard time of it. Last year in August, it was overrun by a mudslide. Within a few minutes, the fate of the inhabitants changed abruptly. Many houses were destroyed, all residents were evacuated for a few days. Now the residents are returning.
Accompanied return
Two filmmakers from 360VRmovieMichael Litzko and Christina Zulauf accompanied Michele Marazzi on the day of his return to the village and filmed a VR report. Michele Marazzi, a resident of Bondowar, was a foreman in the sawmill that was hit hard by the debris flows in August.
As the makers write in a press release, the film transports the viewer on site into the scenery of devastated houses and allows them to experience the disaster. In this way, they wanted to take a deeper look at the events using virtual reality and give the general public an insight into the situation in Bondo.
On Wednesday, the film was screened at the Chur City Library. In the video, the viewer can look around in 360 degrees, according to the press release. The immensely large stones that the debris flow carried away and placed in front of the entrance to a residential building can be seen. It is also possible to view the devastated Marazzi sawmill and the rooms that have been cleared of mud. A teaser of the film is available here:
