The Emmy is the most important television award in the USA and the prizes in the smaller categories have already been awarded in the run-up to the big ceremony on 17 September 2017. The VR film "The People's House" won an Emmy.
VR films do not yet have their own category, but they are listed under "Outstanding Interactive Programme", which consists of five areas. "The People's House: Inside the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama", as it is known in full, won in "Outstanding Original Interactive Programme". The 360-degree film was able to prevail against two other VR contents: "Dear Angelica" and "Mission: ISS". The other two nominations were not VR productions.
Incidentally, all three VR projects were supported by Oculus. In "The People's House", which is available free of charge for Oculus Rift (also via YouTube) and Samsung Gear VR, Barack and Michelle Obama guide us through the White House and tell interesting stories. The VR film "Pearl" also won in the "Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Programming" category. The 2D version of "Pearl" was even nominated for an Oscar.
"Pearl" is an animated VR road movie that lasts just under six minutes. You experience the action from the passenger seat of an old Chevy. It is about a father-daughter relationship that covers a period of 20 years. The emotional VR experience is available for HTC Vive via Viveport and also with YouTube available.
