Standalone VR headset from Oculus

Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are currently the high-end VR headsets on the market, but they also require a powerful PC. On the other hand, there are cheaper solutions such as Samsung Gear VR or Google Daydream View. Here, smartphones are plugged into VR mounts. Oculus may want to offer a VR headset that lies somewhere in between.

How Bloomberg Oculus and its parent company Facebook are working on a wireless standalone VR headset that does not require a smartphone or a PC. The hardware is built directly into the VR glasses. The price is supposed to be an affordable 200 US dollars and a low-priced alternative to the previous high-end VR headsets. The project is codenamed "Pacific" and is supposed to feature a similar design to Oculus Rift.

The device is also supposed to be lighter than the Samsung Gear VR and extremely portable. A wireless control unit is also offered, it is said. The VR goggles are said to be suitable for gaming, movies and social networking. Oculus Rift will remain the top product, while the standalone VR headset is slated for release in 2018, the report said. Official confirmation is lacking so far, with Oculus admitting that it is investing in standalone VR.
