Guinness World Record: 50 hours of continuous VR video viewing

CyberLink has now announced that the Guinness World Record for the longest uninterrupted consumption of video content with a VR headset. CyberLink's team received active support from two fans from New York who endured 50 hours with a virtual reality headset on their heads. 26-year-old Alejandro "AJ" Fragoso and 37-year-old Alex Christison from Brooklyn watched titles such as "Stranger Things VR 360", "Kong VR: Destination Skull Island" and the 360-degree film "Invasion" without interruption. The content was played back using the PowerDVD media player, Oculus VR headsets and VR-compatible laptops.

Both before, during and after the record attempt, Dr Robert Glatter, emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, was available. Dr Glatter conducted regular physical check-ups of the two participants to study the effects in a virtual environment. Dr Glatter noted an increased heart rate in the participants after prolonged insomnia and diagnosed neurological side effects such as an increased frequency of involuntary sleeping with eyes open and acute hallucinations. So the whole thing was not quite healthy.

"Being offered this challenge by Cyberlink was a fascinating opportunity to investigate the effects of VR on health," said Dr Robert Glatter. "There is a lot of speculation about the effects of VR on individuals, but to date no one has tested this in a controlled environment. For AJ and Alex, this was an incredible acid test. They both pushed their bodies to the limit and got impressive results."
