Earth Day 2023: AR addresses climate crisis

Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22 April in over 175 countries and aims to strengthen appreciation for the natural environment. This year, a cross-generational and cross-national art collective presented extraordinary art installations for more climate awareness on the burning theme.

On Earth Day 2023, art-makers used current research findings from the publication Increasing awareness of climate change with immersive virtual reality on the impact of immersive technologies on the perception of the climate crisis. The aim was to raise awareness among people who can hardly be reached with scientific data and analyses. A digital twin of our planet was shown with heavily reddened land surfaces, which makes one associate unbearable heat, drying processes, water scarcity and sandy deserts - and all this in augmented reality.

Two augmented reality installations invite you to play

The installation in augmented reality can be called up on a mobile phone, moved, resized, used as a play object, placed in any real environment, photographed in it or captured in videos. Building on this, a second installation illustrates the possible destruction of our living conditions as a metaphor in an unreal but impressive way. Its title: " A Tribute to Earth Day".

The interaction with virtual objects can influence the user's world of thoughts as an immersive approach.

The artists tread innovative artistic paths: Gerhard Knolmayer often deals with socio-economic issues in his pictorial works, especially the effects of the climate crisis. Sarah Montani is an internationally renowned artist who adds new facets to the classical concept of art with her sferistic art. APTIQ and Jamie F.G use their skills to shape the metaverse in both artistic collectives and business environments.

Gerhard Knolmayer pointedly formulates: "We are welcome to PLAY with our virtual planet. But we should not PLAY with our physical planet.

The installation is now in Vienna until October in the Gallery Hrobsky, Showroom for Young Art.

Vernissage in the presence of the artists: 7 October 2023, 6 p.m.

The Generation of the virtual globe on user mobile phones can be made worldwide and climate-friendly via a QR code.
