Niantic and Nintendo have confirmed a collaboration to combine Niantic's AR technology with Nintendo's characters. The first title is based on the "Pikmin" series.
The mobile augmented reality app centred around "Pikmin" is designed to encourage running, hiking or walking and make the activity even more enjoyable. The release will take place this year, but an exact date has not yet been announced. Specific details about the app itself have also not yet been revealed.
"As we continue to expand our portfolio of games, it was a natural next step to partner with Nintendo," said John Hanke, CEO of Niantic. "We look forward to shaping the future of AR together and bringing Nintendo's beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world."
"Niantic's AR technology allows us to experience the world as if the Pikmin were secretly living around us," says Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto. "Our goal is to give people a new experience that's different from traditional games, with the motto that wandering should be fun. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will be a partner in your life."
