Brushing your teeth is fun if you can save Pokémon in the process - that's the claim of Pokémon Smile. The augmented reality app aims to encourage young children to practise correct and frequent dental hygiene.
Children's toothbrushes that only make sounds are a thing of the past. It can be difficult to motivate children to brush their teeth. But with this clever app from Pokémon Smile this everyday activity should become an adventure again.
Clean thoroughly to save Pokémons
Using the camera on a mobile device, children can save Pokémon that have been captured by bacteria that cause tooth decay by brushing their teeth. If children brush their teeth particularly thoroughly, they can save the Pokémon. The smartphone camera is designed to recognise the child's brushing movements and ensure that they clean all areas of the mouth. With over 100 Pokémon species to rescue, children will always look forward to brushing their teeth as they can complete their Pokédex.
By brushing their teeth regularly, children can also obtain funny Pokémon hats that appear on their heads in the game while they are brushing. Kids can wear a Pokémon hat or even look like a Pokémon themselves. They can also decorate photos in which they are wearing the Pokémon hats to create various funny pictures.
The free helper
Parents can choose to receive a notification from Pokémon Smile up to three times a day, reminding them that it is time for their children to brush their teeth. The duration of each brushing session can also be set to between one and three minutes to meet the different needs of children of different ages.
Which brand of toothbrush is used is irrelevant. The app is free for iOS and Android.
How the app works
Once installed on your smartphone, you create an account on the app. To do this, you can enter your date of birth and gender and select one of several starter Pokémon. From now on, this will help the user with dental care. Then position the smartphone so that the selfie camera captures the entire head. You can then start brushing your teeth. You immediately appear on the display with a funny Pokémon hat and a dirty area can be seen underneath. When you start scrubbing, the virtual dirt particles slowly come off. Gradually, a Pokémon becomes visible underneath. A countdown shows how much longer you have to clean. A graphic also appears showing which parts of the mouth are currently being brushed. If you take the toothbrush away or don't brush properly, the app recognises this and alerts you.
