The Mainz app has been around since 2018 and new cool tools are added every year. On the one hand, it offers interesting information and various services for tourists and citizens and, on the other, historical places that have been virtually reconstructed in 3D. The Roman stage theatre and the medieval old department stores' on the Brand have already been on display. Now there is a new virtual experience, the Jewish quarter and the old synagogue in Mainz.
The former Jewish quarter has been virtually reconstructed with the help of the Jewish Community of Mainz and Geographie für Alle e.V., so that the old synagogue and the surrounding neighbourhood can now be explored digitally using virtual reality.
It's very simple: simply download the free Mainz app and can then choose between tourists or citizens. Then there are various tools, for example a calendar of events, a weather forecast or information on where it is best to park. The special thing about the Mainz app is the virtual views that you can call up from any location and thus also admire the Roman stage theatre, for example.
Virtual treasure hunt from home
Especially in times of social distancing and travel restrictions, the app offers the opportunity to experience the city of Mainz from home. The app is definitely practical, because even as a Mainz resident you can experience the city in a completely new way and take a free city tour with the virtual Gutenberg or go on a treasure hunt and discover things through your mobile phone camera that no longer exist.
If you would like to enhance your virtual reality experience with VR glasses, you can purchase card boards at the Tourist Service Centre in Mainz, which you can place your mobile phone in and then put on like VR glasses. Otherwise, however, it is perfectly sufficient to just look at the former places with your mobile phone.
The MAINZ app is a digital showcase for Mainz as a destination and was developed in 2018 by the state capital of Mainz, mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH and Tourismusfonds Mainz e.V. The app is considered a pioneer in the field of virtual city apps in Germany. Last year, the MAINZ app was nominated for the Rhineland-Palatinate Tourism Award and was voted one of the top 5 best projects of the year.
