Cannes XR Virtual: Filmfestival findet in Virtual Reality statt

Cannes XR Virtual: Film festival takes place in virtual reality

Even if relaxations are there, not everything is possible. That's why this year's Cannes Film Festival is taking place online because of the Corona crisis. The festival's planned XR programme will be shifted to virtual reality. The host and venue will be the Museum of Other Realities.

It was to be the second time Cannes offered its own XR programme: in 2019, more than 200 VR films were shown in a space of 700 square metres. For this year, even more space was originally planned. But unfortunately that will not happen because of Corona.

For the 2020 edition, the industry gathering has now been renamed Cannes XR Virtual and will take place from 24 to 26 June at the virtual art gallery Museum of Other Realities (MOR), an exhibition and encounter platform for Virtual Reality-artist, which left Early Access status at the beginning of the year.

The VR app is available in the Oculus Store, on Steam and Viveport. It supports pretty much all PC VR glasses, including Oculus Quest via Oculus. Access to the virtual art museum will be free from 24 June to 3 July to mark the occasion.

The programme is not yet fixed

The Cannes XR Virtual is intended to connect representatives of the XR and film industry. The festival management promises a livestream of the conference, pitching sessions and lectures on the film festival's paid online platform. The XR projects are to be shown on the VR platform Veer.

Jérôme Paillard, Executive Director of the Marché du Film, said in a statement that he was very impressed with how quickly the team and the partners had set up a completely new concept. With this, it is possible to show the VR shows planned for Cannes worldwide with optimal quality.

Those without VR glasses will be able to watch the films in selected demo rooms in larger cities in the USA, China and France.

Other partners besides the Museum of Other Realities are the Tribeca Film Festival and the VR film festival Kaleidoscope, which will also present a number of films themselves. Details on the implementation and programme of Cannes XR Virtual are to follow later.
