Project with WHO: Snapchat introduces new augmented reality feature

Snapchat is teaming up with the WHO and believes that its users play an important role in containing the virus. An augmented reality (AR) function is intended to help with this.

Snapchat, like almost all social media players, is currently experiencing an insane increase in users. Now Snapchat wants to seize the moment and, together with the World Health Organisation (WHO), has developed tools that combine Covid-19 with the typical Snapchat functions. Snapchat has launched a new AR game to dispel some of the most common myths and fake news surrounding the coronavirus. Here, users rate statements about the coronavirus as truth or myth. So far, 68 million users worldwide are said to have viewed Covid-19-related content on Snapchat. Snapchat is convinced that its relatively young users play a major role in preventing the spread of coronavirus. That's why they need to be educated.

Another tool that Snapchat has launched with the WHO is designed to generate donations for the WHO's Covid-19 Solidarity Fund. The so-called Donation Lens uses AR to project a symbol onto a banknote when the user holds the camera over it and taps it on their display.

Using the COVID-19 Donation Lens basically works like any other Snapchat filter. With the Snapchat camera open, you point the smartphone at a banknote. The screen must also be touched at the same time. The Snapchat camera recognises the banknote automatically thanks to so-called markertech technology. Alternatively, the AR feature can also be activated via the Snapcode and the Lens carousel.

The symbol stands for the purpose of the donation and is intended to show where his money could go. There is a choice of tracking the spread of the virus, providing medical care for patients and equipping frontline staff. Accordingly, the symbol is a hospital, a face mask or a microscope. The user is directed to the donation organisation by swiping up. COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund of the United Nations Foundation forwarded.

The Donation Lens works in 33 countries and 32 currencies. It can be used from Tuesday of this week.
