At the CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Panasonic presented a particularly slim VR headset presentedwhich is currently running under the name "VR Eyeglasses" (not the final name). This is still a prototype, but the concept behind it is very interesting.
The "VR Eyeglasses" are barely bigger than a pair of sunglasses and, at just 150 grams, weigh only a quarter as much as the Oculus Quest. The slim form factor should actually make them comfortable to wear, but several publications that have tried out the VR glasses criticise the front-heavy design, which could cause the device to slip off the nose too easily, especially when playing games.
Micro OLED displays are installed in the prototype, which, according to Panasonic, enable a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. However, it is not known whether this resolution applies to both eyes or to one eye at a time. Furthermore, a refresh rate of 60 hertz and a field of view of only 70 degrees are mentioned, which is very little. Nevertheless, almost no fly screen effect can be seen. It must be remembered that many of the components are only placeholders, which is why a 100-degree field of view would also be possible if larger OLED displays were installed.
Editors who have tested the "VR Eyeglasses" also praise the audio quality of the integrated earbuds. The tracking is apparently not so great, as the prototype shown only has three degrees of freedom. According to Panasonic, room tracking is being considered, but this would increase the weight of the VR glasses. So there is definitely potential, even if one or two optimisations are still necessary.
