In Vienna, the dead are brought back to life with AR

Five gravestones are currently causing confusion among tourists and Viennese alike. If you scan the QR code depicted on the gravestones with your smartphone, the "dead" lying inside are brought to life thanks to augmented reality. A macabre and humorous campaign by the Vienna Volkstheater for the premiere of the new play "Heavy Bones".

The Vienna Volkstheater and the advertising agency Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann staged a sensational, macabre and humorous event for the world premiere of David Schalko's successful novel "Heavy Bones" in Vienna: marble gravestones commemorate the protagonists who died in the play and bring them to life in an unusual way.

Augmented reality is used to give the supposedly deceased a few last words. If you scan the QR code on the gravestones with your smartphone, a video with a message from the respective figure appears on the display.

A total of five gravestones were erected in Vienna. Two at the Museumsquartier, one at the Karlskirche, one at the Kaiserwiese in the Prater and one in Donaucity on Kirchenplatz. They will remain in place until the premiere on 15 January at the Volkstheater.

The campaign is somewhat reminiscent of the Japanese app Spot Message, which we reported on and which you can use to communicate with your loved ones.
