Mixed reality experience links opera backdrop with augmented reality

The Welsh National Opera has collaborated with partners to create the mixed reality opera The Vixen's Tale. The story is based on Leoš Janáček's opera "The Cunning Little Vixen". The XR experience is also aimed specifically at a younger audience.

People of an advanced age are more likely to visit the opera. But done right, it's definitely something cool for kids too. This is demonstrated by the mixed reality opera The Vixen's Tale, a "pop-up book" that you can walk through with an AR-enabled smartphone. Users follow a digital fox through a real backdrop and learn more about the story and music of the opera.

Technically, the AR experience is skilfully implemented: The backdrop itself visualises the world of the play and also serves as a marker for the smartphone. It knows exactly where which digital object or character should be displayed. This brings the actually static wooden structure to life digitally.

The mixed reality opera will be presented at the art centre in Cardiff Bay until the beginning of November.
