Samsung patents foldable AR glasses

Samsung is apparently considering making foldable AR glasses. This emerges from a recent patent application.

The document, which Samsung has sent to the US authorities for patenting, shows a device that folds and looks similar to regular AR glasses, but the frame is much thicker because electronic components are built into it. The final design could still change, as Engadget reports, but the current idea is that the device will turn on automatically when it is opened.

As long as it is open, a small projector will beam images onto a screen that is in the wearer's field of vision. To prevent the device from switching off unintentionally, magnetic sensors may also be used to keep the glasses activated until a user deliberately closes them. Samsung does not give any more precise information about which components may be used. ARM processors are mentioned, but no further details are given.

Gear VR is still supported

Samsung has made an attempt to enter the VR field with the Gear VR. The device was released in 2015 and is still supported by new devices, such as the Galaxy S10. However, an updated version has not yet been announced.
