1.5 million euros - Bavaria establishes centres for VR

With three new centres in Munich, Würzburg and Nuremberg, the Free State of Bavaria wants to promote the development of virtual reality and augmented reality. This describes various representations of computer-generated, artificially created worlds.

In the current double budget, 1.5 million euros are available for these technologies, said Digital Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) on Thursday in the Economic Affairs Committee of the Bavarian state parliament in Munich. The aim is to enable new applications in education, museums, healthcare and industry. "Virtual reality and augmented reality "Made in Bavaria" should become a national and international brand," emphasised Gerlach.

The "XR Hub" user centre is to be established in Munich by September - it will receive annual funding of 500,000 euros, followed by the regional centres for Lower and Middle Franconia in March 2020. Both centres will also receive a total of half a million euros for the year. "However, we need permanent funding for this and are asking for your support," said Gerlach, addressing the MPs.

Gerlach also announced that 300 women had applied for the first talent promotion programme for more women in digital professions. Every year, 50 young women between the ages of 18 and 30 will take part in the programme. They will be supported by mentors from the industry, including Sabine Bendiek, CEO of Microsoft Germany, and Professor Sami Haddadin from the Chair of Robotics at the Technical University of Munich.
