The US Army wants to use a 3D VR simulator for military training within two years. It will contain realistic simulations including civilians as well as various weather and climate conditions. The aim is to improve soldiers' skills.
The 3D VR training version "One World Terrain" is to be used in US military training by 2021. The contracts for this will be awarded next month.
Major General Maria Gervais explained"What I think we're going to do with the artificial training environment is the most revolutionary thing since the development of our live training environment in our combat training centres. We see this as a second revolution in US Army training."
The virtual reality 3D training options will further improve soldiers' skills as they are based on real US military combat missions and faithfully reproduce the army's weapon systems. Civilians, enemies and even animals will be included.
This includes a jungle-like environment: "We are working with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii so that we can test the technology and achieve a jungle-like environment."
The training sessions in the centres will be continued. The existing simulation trainers are outdated and date back to the 1980s and 1990s. As they are very hardware- rather than software-based and require a lot of capacity, changes to the simulation are extremely costly.
