2018 is over and it was a great year for VR. There were quite a few brilliant flagship titles such as "Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, "Skyrim VR" and "Beat Saber"which have confirmed to us what is still possible in VR - but even more so what is yet to come. One thing is certain: virtual adventures are becoming ever more varied and comprehensive. We don't want to withhold a foretaste of the games we are particularly looking forward to this year.
Blood and Truth (PSVR)
With "Blood & Truth", a sequel to "The London Heist" awaits us: The short but impressive noir shooter with impressive scenes such as drive-by gangster shootings from a car chase already played smoothly with the Move controllers back then. There is no date yet for the release of the spiritual successor, but Sony invited game journalists to try it out a few months ago. Our colleagues from Games.ch tested the shooter for us tested and had fun with the mix of firearms, hand grenades, climbing and mini-games, despite minor criticism of the tracking. The gameplay is based on a mixture of standing, moving, teleporting and dodging, coupled with elements such as picking locks.
Stormland (Oculus Rift)
In "Stormland", you take on the role of an apocalyptic android. After countless years, torn apart by a storm, you awaken from a deep sleep and suddenly find yourself in a completely different environment. On foot and with climbing skills, you will encounter other robots in the future who are not necessarily friendly to you. The open game world will invite you to play in both single-player and co-operative modes. You will also acquire numerous new items of equipment through crafting. Gradually, new locations in the large world will be unlocked with expanded abilities.
Deflector (Rift)
With "Deflector", from the forge of "Wilson's Heart"is a Rift-exclusive title. You take on the role of an agent tasked with uncovering a global crime syndicate. It's obviously not just about catching bad guys with your shooting iron: Occasional fistfights also await you and you can look forward to some spectacular stunt action. Our colleagues from "Road to VR" (see video) have already played the title in a hands-on session. Now we're just waiting for a release date that you can mark in your diary.
Eden Tomorrow (PSVR)
The sci-fi adventure "Eden Tomorrow", originally planned for Oculus Rift, will soon be released exclusively on PlayStation VR. Our colleagues from Games.ch have already been able to try it out and have gained an initial impression. made available. According to their initial judgement, the adventure should be quite promising. And it gets even better: the official demo has been available in the PlayStation Store for a few days now ready to try out. It will be interesting to see what the developers make of the final version. It should be ready sometime in the first quarter of 2019.
The Gallery Episode 3
"The Gallery" from the Canadian VR professionals at "Cloudhead Games" has so far been released as a two-part epic for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The first part, "Call of The Starseed", was almost a masterpiece given the early days of PC VR glasses, as the gameplay, graphics and film sequences on the deserted island were all impressive. Anyone who remembers the explorative "Myst" puzzle adventure game from the nineties will recognise similar elements, as the main aim is to solve simple to moderately difficult puzzles with objects in order to follow the game plot. The second part, "Heart of The Emberstone", includes exciting abilities with your hands. These include gravity and special gloves to fling objects around. There is no first trailer for the third part yet. If you are not familiar with the two puzzle adventures, take a look at the trailer for part 2.
Lone Echo 2 (Oculus Rift)
At the mercy of gravity, in the space puzzle adventure "Lone Echo 2" for Oculus Rift you will - in all likelihood - once again explore a highly detailed space station as a humanoid robot. However, not much information about the sequel is yet available leaked. The space physics of the predecessor were definitely very impressively realised for a VR game, as you can see from the in our test you can read. You cling to pillars and let yourself be propelled by the thrust when needed. Oculus Studios and Ready At Dawn have already released a first trailer and a 360-degree video for "Lone Echo 2".
Golem (PSVR)
Where is "Golem"? The much-publicised PSVR title from Highware Games has been delayed again, as the exclusive game was last announced for 2018. The title was promised very soon after the launch of the PlayStation VR. But as we all know, hope dies last. The adventure tells the story of a girl who suffers a serious accident. She then develops magical powers that allow her to take control of golems. Unfortunately, there is still no exact release date known - but we are happy to wait.
A Fisherman's Tale (Vive, Rift, WMR, PSVR)
In "A Fisherman's Tale", you are virtually trapped inside yourself. Original: Locked in a lighthouse, you solve various puzzles as a puppet by manipulating a miniature doll's house version of the same room. For example, when you look up into the sky, you will see a giant version of yourself looking down on you. The wittily designed comic book world, which already exudes its own special charm in the first trailer, certainly conveys a special ambience.
Star Child (PSVR)
It was once said that the work on "Star Child", from the makers of "Lucky's Tale" (2016), had been cancelled. However, the game for PSVR is apparently still in development. However, there is no news on a release date. The makers of the stereoscopic VR platformer "Lucky's Tale" delivered a smooth 3D bouncer in top quality. The cuddly Rift launch title is still an insider tip today. Despite the limited inclusion of VR possibilities, it was a great game. In "Star Child", you also follow events from a potentially exciting puppet theatre perspective.
Firmament (Rift, Vive)
A game from Cyan! In fact, a VR game from the developer garage of the mouse-click puzzles from the nineties ("Myst" and "Obduction") is currently in development. However, much about the game project "Firmament" is still under wraps. According to the developers, it is about a "monumental journey through various mysterious worlds". We can't wait to find out. The only "amuse bouche" we have at the moment is a mystical trailer - but it should be exciting.
Dreams (PSVR)
Shooter, platformer or interactive film? "Dreams" comes from the makers of the cult hit "Little Big Planet". The creative title lets you create a complete game world according to your own preferences and share it with friends or the community. You will take on different characters: There are almost no limits to your creativity. It is even possible to create films and music without gameplay. It would come as no surprise if Sony were to "Astro Bot: Rescue Missionthe VR game of the year (2018), is about to release another hit with unique selling points.
Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot (Vive, PSVR)
Whether it is after "Doom VFR" will another Bethesda spin-off make it onto the VR shooter hit parade? Apparently, the first presentation at E3 was not yet able to convince the entire audience. What's not yet is still possible. In any case, you are once again B.J. Blazkowicz, who we already know from the original Wolfenstein, and you are responsible for hacking various war machines as well as eliminating all the Nazi hordes. Judging by the active community exchange of smaller VR developer communities, Bethesda, as a triple-A studio, will certainly still be working on many details of the title. Let's hope so.
Titan Arena (Rift, Vive)
If virtual reality can convey anything in a pretty impressive way, it is certainly the first-person view from a giant titan. You only have to play a rail shooter like "Archangel" to slip into a "Mechwarrior" from the colossal first-person perspective. Similar to "Shadow of the Colossus", the opulent-looking adventure, of which there is already a trailer, is likely to bring more of a quiet exploration-adventure component to the game, the plot of which is mainly about crushing large titans. But we already like this idea - and the trailer.
Ghost Giant (PSVR)
Sony has announced "Ghost Giant", another new adventure game for Playstation VR that has been developed from the ground up for the VR goggles. You have the fate of the character of a spiritual being in your hands. It is also your hands that help the lonely farmer boy Louis through his arduous everyday life. Similar to "Moss", you support the protoganist by showing the boy the way with your astral hands. This involves observing what is happening and opening windows and doors in the surroundings at the same time.
Space Junkies (Vive, Rift)
According to Ubisoft, "Space Junkies" is an arcade shooter with jetpack action that is being developed exclusively for virtual reality. According to the makers, the title offers "intuitive, fast-paced multiplayer fun in three-dimensional, orbital arenas". Full VR body control is supported, allowing players to immerse themselves in intense and weightless battles. You could already take part in a closed beta last year (we reported): "Space Junkies" will be released in spring 2018 for Oculus Rift with Touch and HTC Vive.
