On the CES 2019 In Las Vegas, a new variant of the HTC Vive Pro was presented that offers an additional feature: Eye tracking from the company Tobii is integrated.
The sensors required for eye tracking are mounted in a ring around the two lenses of the VR headset. With invisible light pulses, the direction of the eyes' gaze is precisely recorded. This makes it possible to operate menus, for example, without having to use controllers.
The so-called "foveated rendering" also ensures that the graphics are displayed in the most detail in the centre of the viewing direction. At the edges, the details are reduced because the human eye sees less sharply there anyway. This makes it possible to use or save computing power more effectively. Otherwise, no major changes are to be expected in the hardware specifications. However, there is talk of improvements in the ergonomics and the headphones.
HTC Vive Pro Eye is not intended to replace the previous VR headsets. HTC is targeting more business customers, which is why one can assume a correspondingly high price, but no exact information has been revealed yet. In any case, the fun will cost more than a normal HTC Vive Pro. The release will take place in the second quarter of 2019. The official product page is already online.
