In May 2015, the VR start-up Feelreal already launched a Kickstarter campaign for a VR mask with which one was supposed to smell and feel virtual reality. That didn't work out then. Now comes the second attempt.
Feelreal has meanwhile revised its VR mask and a Kickstarter campaign is planned again, which should start soon. The more sophisticated product is said to simulate heat, wind, mist and touch in addition to smells. Feelreal wants to offer 255 different flavours, while up to nine of them can be inserted into the VR mask at the same time.
The Smell Mask will be compatible with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Oculus Go and Gear VR, with the device attached to the bottom of the respective VR headset via a magnetic mount. Data connection is via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The weight is 200 grams and the battery is supposed to last four hours.
According to the manufacturer games such as "Beat Saber" and "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim VR" are supported. According to reports, it should be possible for developers to retrofit the scent and haptic features without much effort. In addition, Feelreal will offer its own 360-degree player with videos and VR experiences.
