Tesla wants to use augmented reality for factory workers

Tesla has filed a patent application for an augmented reality application that is intended to make the work of factory workers easier. Tesla already experimented with Google Glass in 2016. This time, the data glasses are also supposed to recognise objects.

Tesla is seeking to patent an AR application for factory workers. The patent application Augmented Reality Application for Manufacturing describes a system that displays data in the field of vision of workers when Google Glass-like glasses have detected an object of interest. Unlike Google Glass, Tesla's AR glasses are apparently also supposed to be able to recognise objects.

In the patent application, Tesla gives application examples from automobile production. If the user moves around the object, data such as welding and gluing points, screws and bushings are displayed. The user can also use the AR device to request information about any identified object, such as the welding sequence or manufacturing tolerances. This would allow workers to perform manufacturing tasks more efficiently, Tesla writes in the patent application.

According to the electric carmaker, the technology has the potential to "significantly increase the speed and efficiency associated with manufacturing and, in particular, the production of automotive parts and vehicles".
