HTC announced that the HTC Vive Wireless Adapter can be officially pre-ordered from 5 September 2018. The adapter frees VR users from having to connect to their PC via cable. The release will take place on 24 September 2018 from 299 US dollars
Incidentally, users do not need to worry about a reduction in performance with the wireless VR experience, as the performance remains the same. The base adapter supports both HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro. However, HTC Vive Pro owners require an additional compatibility pack. This contains a customised connection cable for the Vive Pro connections, as well as foam padding and a mounting piece tailored to Vive Pro.
"Since the launch of Vive, we have been pursuing the dream of a wireless premium VR experience. Our private and corporate customers have always encouraged us in this desire," says Paul Brown, GM Vive Europe. "We are proud to deliver the Vive Wireless Adapter to our customers with the help of our talented partners Intel and DisplayLink. Combining high quality, low latency and ease of use, the adapter delivers on our promise of premium wireless VR."
Here's how it works according to the manufacturer: "The Vive Wireless Adapter can be set up in minutes by installing a PCI-e card and connecting a sensor to the PC that transmits to and from the new wireless Vive headset. The adapter has a range of six metres with a field of view of 150 degrees from the sensor and runs in the interference-free 60 GHz band with Intel's WiGig specification, which in combination with DisplayLink's XR codec means low latency and high performance with hours of battery life. The adapter is powered by the HTC QC 3.0 PowerBank, which can also be used as a charger for a smartphone. A PowerBank is included in the scope of delivery."
