Studio for "walk-in films" opens in Babelsberg

Three-dimensional shots of actors in action - this is made possible by a new film studio that opens on Monday in the media city of Babelsberg.

In a 170 square metre circular studio, actors and objects are scanned from all sides with 36 cameras. Like a hologram, they can later be placed in real or virtual worlds. Viewers can use virtual reality goggles to "enter" the scenes recorded in this way and view the actors and objects from all angles. The process is called "volumetric filming". With its help, it would be possible, for example, to create a database of extras that can be used in the background of film recordings.

The only studio of its kind on the European mainland

The state of Brandenburg is funding the volumetric film studio with around two million euros. It is operated by a consortium consisting of the film equipment supplier ARRI, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, the IT company Interlake System, Studio Babelsberg and the film company UFA.

The studio for "walk-in film" in Babelsberg is the first of its kind on the European mainland. There is another one in London. The studio is available for commissioned productions. Beyond the film industry, it could also be useful for medical technology, automotive engineering or computer game manufacturers, according to Babelsberg studio boss Charlie Woebcken.
